The history of India has been rich in various forms of art be it music, singing, painting and making sculptures. Sculpting is a three-dimensional art form that involves carving and modeling, in various mediums like stone, metal, wood etc. to create a visual splendor. This art form has witnessed immense patronage in India by the various rulers who ruled it, and hence, the sculptures depict a history and provide insights to that era. India’s first sculptures were mostly made in stone, terra cotta and bronze and were found in the Indus Valley Civilization. During the Maurya dynasty, most sculptures were in a story telling format, depicting the religions prevalent during those times, namely, Hinduism and Buddhism. Buddhists sculptures and art-form became prolific during this period and the best works of this era were the Great Stupa at Sanchi. With the surge of Hinduism during the fourth century, the era was marked by innumerable images of popular Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The Udaigiricaves, the Ajanta Caves, the Ellora Caves and the Elephanta Caves are the perfect examples of this era. The art of sculpting in India are still as prevalent and breathtaking as that of the gone era. The sculptures, even today, are unique in that they display a long standing tradition of the cultural, regional, and religious beauty of India. Contemporary sculpture art of India is very popular worldwide for its aesthetic prowess. It has gained such heights that India can boast not only about its top sculpture artist in the world, but many Sculpture Making traditions.
In India, sculptors like Sankho Chaudhry, Ram Kinkar Baiz (best sculpture artist in the world) have gained immense recognition for their skill, nationally and internationally. The artists behind the beautiful Sculptures are twice blessed, as they can first create the fine art sculpture in their mind and then re-create it with their hands. Even the prominent print media features the famous sculptors on Page 3 regularly and hence a new terminology Page 3 artist in evolving.
